Margin notes for the work ahead.

The practical bits we end up explaining on most first calls, written down once. Pick a topic; nothing to sign up for, nothing tracked.

  1. Guide · design

    Write the one-sentence purpose first

Before sketching screens, write: “This app helps [person] to [task] without [pain].” If you cannot, the idea needs more thought, not more features.

  2. Checklist · mobile

    Native or cross-platform?

Native suits heavy device features and the most polished feel. Cross-platform suits one shared codebase and faster parity. A responsive web app suits content and forms. Decide by what the app must do offline and on-device.

  3. Checklist · publishing

Before you submit to an app store

Developer account in your organisation’s name; privacy policy URL live; data collection declarations match reality; screenshots for each required size; a test login for reviewers; support contact that is monitored.

  4. Guide · web

What a small business website really needs

Clear service descriptions, accurate contact details and hours, a privacy notice, fast loading on phones, and a contact form that fails honestly. Most other things are optional.

  5. Guide · design

Testing a prototype with five people

Give each person a real task, stay quiet, and note where they hesitate. Five sessions will reveal most of the major usability problems.

  6. Guide · publishing

    Reading a store rejection

Rejections usually cite a guideline number. Read that guideline in full, fix the root cause rather than the symptom, and reply politely in the resolution centre explaining the change.

  7. Checklist · web

    Accessibility quick check

Tab through every page; zoom to 200%; check colour contrast; ensure every image has sensible alternative text; ensure every form field has a visible label.

  8. Guide · mobile

    Planning for updates

Budget for at least one update in the three months after launch. Operating system releases, user feedback and store policy changes will all require it.

  9. Checklist · it

Basic IT hygiene for small teams

Use a password manager; turn on two-step verification for email and developer accounts; keep devices updated; know who can recover each critical account.
